Casas de Santana
Santana houses are one of the iconic images of Madeira, highly sought after by tourists, due to their characteristics that made it a distinctive place: they are wooden houses, with a triangular roof, made of straw (material used for waterproofing) and small in size (about 4 meters wide by 7 meters long).
In the past, it was common to find these houses made of natural materials, namely in rural areas. Today, they remain in restricted places in Santana County, in memory of the local heritage.
You may visit them in the Nucleus of Typical Houses of Santana, next to the Town Hall, and in the Santana Theme Park, where you can also have a look at their interiors and traditional decoration.
